Seven Things to Do While You’re Stuck at Home

Sara Matvey, Editor

With COVID-19 keeping us all indoors, one thing we can all relate to is the copious amount of daily boredom. Here are 10 different and exciting things to do while you’re stuck at home.

1. Craft

Craft stores may be closed, but you can still spend some time crafting. The first option is to use household items you might have, like toilet paper rolls! Save the empty rolls for some time-consuming fun. Here are some ideas from Country Living. The next option is to order your supplies online, which is by far the easiest. Find something you like on Pinterest and online order from Target, Walmart, or Amazon to get your supplies. Lastly, support small businesses! Websites like Etsy have crafters who are sell crafting kits. I have bought embroidery kits and there is so much more available!

2. Bake Something from Scratch

Baking using boxed ingredients is always fun, but if you bake from scratch, it can be even more fun! You get to measure out all the ingredients and can make your recipe your own. It takes longer to make from scratch, so you can be occupied for a long time. Heres a recipe for a simple vanilla cake and my personal favorite: bread (it can take a very long time to make!). Be wary when deciding what to bake; try to find something with ingredients from around the house to avoid going to the supermarket.

3. Facetime your Friends and Family

This is easy, free, and can last however long you want it to. During this time of quarantine, it is important to keep in touch with friends and family all while staying safe. Chances are you haven’t seen them for a while so it is important to check in with each other. If you don’t have facetime, you can use apps like Skype or House Party. However you decide to keep in touch, it is important and will keep you busy.

4. TikTok

This app has taken the world by storm and is a great way to spend time. You can spend hours scrolling through your “for you page” or you can get active and dance! TikTok dances are a fun way to get some physical activity in your day. There are tons of different ones that range from easy to hard. TikTok is a great way to spend time and get creative!

5. Watch Tiger King on Netflix

Netflix’s newest hit documentary is Tiger King. If you are a member of the handful of people who haven’t seen it yet, then you should definitely watch it! Tiger King follows a private zoo owner in Oklahoma, Joe Exotic, who owns over 200 tigers and other exotic animals. It follows his hatred for rival zoo owner and animal rights activist, Carole Baskin. I don’t want to spoil it, but it involves polygamy, someone losing an arm, country music, a missing persons case, and a murder for hire scandal. Tiger King is seven 45 minute episodes, and it is so worth your time!

6. Go Outside

The weather has been so nice lately, and spring flowers are finally beginning to bloom. Enjoy the fresh spring air on a nice day and get some exercise in! Go out with your family or your dog and enjoy some time together in the nice weather!

7. Read a Book

Find a book that sounds interesting to you and read it! Nowadays you can get books on your phone or iPad so you are never too far away from a good read. Dive into an exciting fiction book, or read a non-fiction book to learn something new. Reading improves your vocabulary, broadens your knowledge, and improves your brain function. This is one of the best things to do for yourself and it can even help you get a higher SAT score!

Remember to stay home and stay safe during this time. As tempting as it can be to go out and see your friends, it is of the best interest of your community to stay home and stop the spread of COVID-19. Stopping the spread of COVID-19 begins with you staying home and using good judgment when you do go out. Keep Maryland safe and healthy so we can all get back to life as usual quicker!
