Welcoming Ms. Fierro!

October 8, 2018

Mercy High School welcomed history teacher Ms. Denise Fierro at the beginning of this year and so far she is having a “magical” experience with us! Ms. Fierro previously taught at the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Baltimore, MD, for eight months and St. Edwards School in Los Angeles, CA, for seventeen years. She attended California State University in Los Angeles, CA, and Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, AZ. Ms. Fierro majored in criminal justice where she worked with at-risk children to keep them out of gangs. Later, she went back to school and received her Masters Degree in teaching.

Her favorite memory of this past summer was when she went to Portugal. Ms. Fierro went to pick up her daughter who was studying in the city of Braga and was able to spend time in the country. She traveled to Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, and the city of Porto. While on her vacation, she took a cooking class and learned to make Pastel de nata, a custard tart.

A book Ms. Fierro read that inspired her was The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto by Mitch Albom. Ms. Fierro loves this book because it encompasses two of her favorite things: music and traveling. It left her with a profound message about the joys and sorrows of life and how we have the ability to bring “magic” to each other. She highly recommends it and it is a fast read.

Ms. Fierro’s favorite song at the moment is “Perfect Symphony” by Ed Sheeran with Andrea Bocelli. Sheeran’s folk-pop style mixed with Bocelli’s operatic voice intrigues her. Bocelli is one of her favorite artists, and she always enjoys his duets with other singers.

So far, Ms. Fierro has loved Mercy’s welcoming community and positive environment. She looks forward to each day because there is always something new and exciting.
