This year the volleyball team had the most tryouts than in recent years. Almost 40 girls tried out for the junior varsity and varsity teams, which is an increase of almost ten girls over last year’s tryouts. The coaches, Matt Marion and Catlin Merritt, had to extend the tryouts two extra days, to make sure they were choosing the right girls for their volleyball team. First cuts were made on August 20th. Final cuts were made on August 22nd. Compared to the almost 40 girls who tried out, only 23 made the team, 11 for JV and 12 for varsity. When we were bothering Varsity coach Matt Marion, for these numbers, we interviewed new Junior Varity coach Caitlin Merritt, Mercy graduate of 2006.
“It’s a big transition from player to coach,” says Caitlin Merritt ’06, new JV volleyball coach. “It’s hard, but it’s also interesting because I think Mercy athletics have changed for the better. It’s an adjustment for me because now I’m the one in charge and it’s fun. It was both easy and hard teaching beginners, but the girls pick up skills quickly. I enjoy coaching because it’s a nice distraction from work, and it’s something I look forward to and the girls keep me up to date.”
